Safeguarding & Child Protection

Every student in our care is a child living thousands of miles from home. Keeping them safe is not one feature of our service — it is the service. This statement sets out how we meet that responsibility.
1. Our commitment
The welfare of every child in our care is paramount. Every student has a named guardian, a 24/7 emergency line, and a team whose duty is to make sure they are safe, seen and supported — at school, with host families and while travelling.
2. The framework we work to
Our safeguarding practice is built around UK law and statutory guidance, including the Children Acts 1989 and 2004, Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and the Prevent duty, together with the standards of AEGIS, the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students.
3. Safer recruitment and training
Everyone who works for us undergoes safer-recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS check. Safeguarding training is mandatory, refreshed regularly and tracked to its expiry date in our compliance systems, and our team includes staff trained in the Prevent duty.
4. Host families
Host families are personally vetted before any student stays with them. Every resident of the household aged 16 or over holds an enhanced DBS check, homes pass a health-and-safety inspection with scheduled re-inspections, and hosts complete regular self-declarations.
5. Designated Safeguarding Lead
We have a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and a deputy with the authority and training to act on any concern. Safeguarding concerns are recorded in a restricted, tamper-evident log that only safeguarding staff can access, and every concern is reviewed and signed off by the DSL.
The DSL's contact details are shared with every family, school and host at enrolment and are available on request.
6. Raising a concern
If you are worried about a child in our care — whatever your connection to them — contact us at guardians@whichbritishschool.com or on the 24/7 emergency line. You do not need to be certain; share the worry and we will take it from there.
If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 first.
7. Records and technology
Our record platform is built for safeguarding: role-based access, restricted storage for sensitive identifiers, an append-only audit trail of every change, and a compliance spine that tracks every DBS check, training certificate and inspection to its expiry date.
